Is Freelancer Plus at $19.99 a month worth it, or should you stay free and buy Connects? Pick the month that looks like yours.
Your answer
Stay on the free plan
Plus costs $6.49 a month more — $33.79 against $27.30 on Basic.
Connects alone can never pay for it: both plans buy every extra Connect at $0.15. Billing about $129.80 a month through Direct Contracts would flip this.
Break-even: there is none at this Connects rate. You need 192 Connects this month.
Every figure is quoted from Upwork’s own pages and dated below. Prices last checked August 19, 2026. Last updated August 24, 2026.
Freelancer Plus includes 100 Connects a month against 10 on the free plan. At Upwork’s own $0.15 a Connect, those 90 extra Connects are worth $13.50 against a $19.99 subscription. Past the allowance both plans buy Connects at the same price, so no amount of bidding closes that gap. On Connects alone, Plus never pays for itself.
One thing does close it: the Direct Contract fee. The free plan pays 5% on clients you bring to Upwork yourself, Plus pays 0%. At 12 proposals a month and no Direct Contract work, the free plan costs $27.30 and Plus costs $33.79 — Plus is $6.49 more. It starts paying for itself once you bill about $129.80 a month that way.
If the answer above is that you buy Connects either way, the money goes on proposals you send, not jobs you win — which leaves which jobs you spend them on as the only variable. FreelanceFilter exists for that part. It gives you no Connects and changes no number on this page.
Freelancer Basic is free, gives you 10 Connects a month, and charges $0.15 for every Connect after that. Freelancer Plus costs $19.99, gives you 100 Connects, and charges the same $0.15 after that. The free plan pays a service fee on Direct Contract earnings; Plus pays none.
Connects per proposal is your figure, not Upwork’s. Upwork sets it per job and prints it on the job post, so the page starts at 16 and expects you to change it. Connects are spent when you send a proposal, won or lost.
Break-even is the smallest number of proposals a month at which Plus stops costing more. Because both plans pay the same for Connects past their allowance, the gap stops moving once you pass 100 Connects — which is why the calculator will sometimes tell you there is no break-even at all. That is the honest answer, not a bug.
What it leaves out: Connects Upwork hands out for badges, interviews and promotions, which are real but unpredictable; the availability badge, which spends Connects weekly at a rate Upwork varies; and the service fee on ordinary marketplace contracts, which is identical on both plans and cancels out.
Upwork changes these. If one has moved since August 19, 2026, the figure below is wrong and this calculator is wrong with it — check the source before you rely on it.

Upwork states the Direct Contract fee as a flat 5%, which is this page’s default. It sits oddly beside Upwork’s other statement that the freelancer service fee “ranges from 0% to 15% per contract” by type of work. We could not confirm any other Direct Contract rate on an Upwork page, so 5% is what we publish — and because that spread is the only thing that can make the subscription pay for itself, the calculator lets you replace it with your real rate.
A fixed Connects cost per proposal: Upwork publishes none, so the 16 here is a starting point, not a fact. A mobile app store price: app subscriptions can be priced differently, and we could not confirm any app store figure against an Upwork-owned page on August 19, 2026, so only the published $19.99 is used.

Upwork states that “Freelancer Plus subscribers on average have a 50% higher chance of being hired” and that “Chosen by the best, 40% of subscribers are Top Rated or Top Rated Plus.”. Both are footnoted marketing claims the seller makes about its own product, published with no sample, no period and no control for the obvious confounder — freelancers who already work more are the ones most likely to subscribe. Treat them as claims, not findings.

Both, in that order. Upwork states that “All of your Connects will roll over (unless they expire). There is no limit on the amount of Connects you can hold.” and, separately, that “Connects expire one year from the date of issue.”. So there is no cap on the balance you can build, but a Connect you never spend is worth nothing twelve months after it was issued. For this calculator that means a quiet month is survivable — the Connects sit in your balance — while a quiet year is not: the $19.99 leaves your account every month while the Connects it bought start expiring.

The headline allowances are not comparable: Freelancer.com sells bids, Upwork sells Connects, and one proposal costs several Connects.
| Freelancer.com plan | Per month | Bids per month |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | $4.99 | 50 |
| Plus | $9.99 | 100 |
| Professional | $49.00 | 300 |
| Premier | $99.00 | 1,500 |

That depends on what you win, not on what you pay to bid. Joining is free and Freelancer Basic may include 10 Connects a month. Past those, Connects cost 15 cents each, so a 16 Connect proposal costs 2 dollars 40 cents to send. The service fee on earnings runs from 0 to 15 percent per contract. Upwork is worth it when the work you win covers both, which is a question about your win rate.
The arithmetic is the same on either plan. Twelve proposals a month at sixteen Connects each costs 27 dollars and 30 cents on free Basic, because only ten Connects are free. Win one contract from those twelve and the bidding cost is trivial. Win none and you paid to be ignored, which no subscription fixes. What matters is which jobs you spend Connects on, not how many you hold.
Upwork lists Freelancer Plus at 19 dollars and 99 cents per month, including 100 Connects each month and full access to Uma, its AI assistant. Freelancer Basic is free and may include 10 Connects a month. A subscription bought inside a mobile app can be priced differently, and we could not confirm any app store figure on an Upwork page, so this calculator uses the published web price only.
They meter bidding differently. Freelancer.com sells bids: 4 dollars 99 for 50 a month, 9 dollars 99 for 100, 49 dollars for 300, 99 dollars for 1500. Upwork sells Connects, and one proposal costs a variable number of them, so 100 Connects is not 100 proposals. At sixteen Connects each, Freelancer Plus covers six proposals a month. Compare cost per proposal sent, not the allowance.
Not on the Connects alone. Plus includes 90 more Connects a month than Basic, worth 13 dollars and 50 cents at Upwork’s own price of 15 cents each, against a subscription of 19 dollars and 99 cents. Both plans pay the same for every Connect past the allowance, so more proposals cannot close that gap. Direct Contracts can: Plus members pay a 0 percent service fee there instead of 5 percent.
Upwork lists six: 100 Connects each month, instant job alerts for projects matching your skills and saved searches, proposal and client insights covering applicants and bids, a 0 percent service fee on Direct Contracts, full access to Uma its AI assistant, and profile customization tools. The product page also advertises visibility into what competitors are bidding.
Business Plus is for clients who hire, not freelancers who bid, and it carries no monthly subscription fee. Upwork states clients instead pay a 10 percent fee on payments made to freelancers, discounted to 8 percent for eligible United States clients paying by checking account. A contract initiation fee of up to 4 dollars 99 applies to contracts under 100 dollars.
